Become a Psychologist in New York - NY

The Office of the Professions (OP) of the New York State Education Department governs psychology-related practices in the state of New York. Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess more moral character.
  • Have at least two years of satisfactory overseen experience.
  • Pass a written exam.
  • Have a doctoral degree that was obtained from an OP-approved program or a program that meets the requirements of the OP.

For those interested in knowing how to become a psychologist in New York, here are the additional steps that applicants will need to follow to obtain a psychology license after completion of an accredited program:

1. Complete the Application for Licensure and First Registration form. The applicant’s signature must be notarized, and he or she must include a check that covers the fee for licensure. The licensure fee is $294, and the fee for a limited permit is $70. Applicants will need to submit their fees and form to:

Applicants interested in knowing how to become a psychologist in New York should note that fees are always subject to change, although the fee that will be required is the fee that was in place at the date of application receipt, provided that fees were not increased on a retroactive basis. Applicants will be charged for the difference in fees if they have been raised retroactively.

Personal checks or money orders should be made out to the New York State Education Department. Cash should not be sent.

Please note that any payments that are sent from outside the United States should be via check or draft in an American bank and in American currency, as any other forms of payment will be denied and returned to the sender.

2. Fill out Section 1 of the form for Certification of Professional Education. This can be found at http://www.op.nysed.gov/pt2.pdf.

3. Applicants interested in knowing how to become a psychologist in New York should consider that they will need to ask the registrar of the school in which they received their doctoral degree to complete Section 2 of the form for Certification of Professional Education. The registrar will need to submit this form, along with an official transcript, to:

4. The applicant interested in knowing how to become a psychologist in New York will need to send a certificate of completion that verifies that he or she has completed a course in Child Abuse Identification Reporting. This course needs to have been though a provider that has been approved by the OP. Applicants who graduated beyond September 1, 1990 from a New York State psychology program that has been registered as a licensure-qualifying institution are already considered credited as having fulfilled this requirement.


Applicants who have not completed a New York State psychology program beyond September 1, 1990 will need to either provide a certificate of completion from a provider that has been approved by the OP, or file a claim of exemption.

5. The applicant will need to complete Section 1 of the Report of Professional Experience form, which can be found at http://www.op.nysed.gov/lsurv4.pdf.

6. The applicant interested in knowing how to become a psychologist in New York will need to ask his or her psychologist who provided supervision of his or her professional experience to fill out Sections 2 and 3 of the Report of Professional Experience form. This psychologist will need to submit the form to the same address as in Step 3 above.

7. The applicant interested in knowing how to become a psychologist in New York will need to wait until the Division of Professional Licensing sends him or her a notice that explains that he or she is qualified to take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) that was developed by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.

Those who wish to know how to become a psychologist in New York should note that in order to be eligible for the exam, applicants need to apply for licensure, pay the fee for licensure, and present documentation that supports these items. Once a candidate is deemed eligible to take the exam, the applicant should send a notice to the Professional Examination Service (PES), which will send the applicant an application packet for the exam.

8. The applicant will need to score 75 percent or higher on the EPPP written exam to be considered at or above New York’s requirements.

9. Once all of the above criteria have been met, the applicant will need to wait until the Division of Professional Licensing submits a license to him or her.
