Your application will includes college transcripts, references, the EPPP exam score (see below) and the fee. If your schools were not APA accredited, there are additional forms.
Unless you are already licensed in another state, you must pass a national exam to demonstrate your knowledge of your chosen field.
The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) is run by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. It covers eight topics:
- ethical, legal, and professional issues
- biological behavior
- cognitive-affective behavior
- social and multi-cultural behavior
- assessment and diagnosis
- treatment, intervention, and prevention
- growth & life-span development
- research methods and statistics
Individuals looking into how to become a psychologist in Oregon should note that once you pass the EPPP, you can sit for the Oregon jurisprudence exam, which will test your knowledge of both national and state-specific rules and regulations, including ethics.
Should your psychological license lapse in Oregon, you can renew it by submitting an application showing that you have kept up with your continuing education coursework and another fee. Typically, the state sends a courtesy reminder to alert you that your license is expiring, but it’s not a bad idea to keep track of it on your own.
