How to Become a Respiratory Therapist in Mississippi

  1. Those interested in Mississippi respiratory therapist careers can call a hospital and ask if you can talk to a respiratory therapist. Ask if you can “shadow” a respiratory therapist for a day.
  2. After you complete your program you will be required to take several exams to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) through the National Board of Respiratory Care. When you are taking the certification exam for the first time you are required to take three portions: Entry Level Exam which costs $190, Written Registry Exam which also costs $190, and the Clinical Simulation Exam which cost $200.There are six different certifications that the NBRC offers.

    • CPFT- Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist. This certification is for Respiratory Therapists who are beginning to practice and are just beginning their careers in Respiratory Therapy.
    • CRT- Certified Respiratory Therapist. This certification is for Respiratory Therapists who are working in entry level positions at hospitals or doctor’s offices who have had some experience in Respiratory Therapy.
    • RRT- Registered Respiratory Therapist. This certification is considered the “gold standard” in certification for Respiratory Therapists.
    • RPFT- Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist. This certification is for advanced level Respiratory Therapists who have been practicing more than a few years.
    • CRT-NPS/RRT-NPS- Certified Respiratory Therapist-Neonatal Pediatric Care Specialist and Registered Respiratory Therapist-Neonatal Pediatric Care Specialist. This certification is for Respiratory Therapists who would like to work with newborns and children.
    • CRT-SDS/ RRT-SDS- Certified Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorders Testing and Therapeutic Intervention Respiratory Care and Registered Respiratory Therapist Sleep Disorders Testing and Therapeutic Intervention Respiratory Care and Registered. This certification is for Respiratory Therapists who would like to treat patients with sleep disorders.


  3. Send a copy of your passing test scores, official transcript, Fingerprint Clearance Card-this is required for all applicants, and an application packet, which can be found at http://msdh.ms.gov/msdhsite/_static/30,0,82,93.html to the Mississippi Department of Health.
