  1. An Associate Degree is the first milestone the candidate has to achieve in becoming a respiratory therapist. This can be achieved by enrolling at a school that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  2. The candidate must also complete the course at the accredited school. In this program, the candidate will be acquainted with the following:

    • Cardiopulmonary Treatment
    • Engaging in leadership
    • Human Anatomy
    • Recordkeeping
    • Accounting
    • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  3. After completing the course, the candidate must also complete a practicum or externship offered by the school. These must be completed at a local clinic or hospital. This would also enable the candidate to show their professionalism in a work like environment. Following this the candidate has to take an exam offered by the National Board of Respiratory Care. This is especially so for the state of Montana.
  4. To advance further in the field of respiratory therapy and to become a licensed full time practitioner of respiratory therapy in the state of Montana, the candidate has to complete a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree.
