Becoming a Respiratory Therapist in New York

To begin New York respiratory therapist careers, practitioners must be state-certified.  The US Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the only states that do not require a respiratory therapist to be licensed are Hawaii and Alaska.  Be sure to check the state licensing website if you live in Hawaii or Alaska in case this changes. 

In New York, information on licensing can be obtained from the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions.

The educational requirements for obtaining a license for practicing as a respiratory therapist are:

  • The applicant must have graduated from high school
  • The applicant must have completed an associate’s degree that has been approved by the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, in respiratory therapy, and at least 30 semester hours have to have been completed

General requirements are:

  • The person seeking licensure must possess good morals
  • They must be at least 18-years-old
  • The applicant must meet all the requirements for the educational and examination rules

Certain forms need to be submitted, depending on whether or not the student attended a New York-certified program or a program certified through the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).  More information can be obtained at http://www.op.nysed.gov on the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions website.

Fees for licensure:
The fees that the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions charges for a license to practice as a respiratory therapist currently is $294 but may change and needs to be paid by a check or a money order.  See the website for more information in case the fee amount changes.  The check can be sent to:
