Becoming a Respiratory Therapist in Oklahoma

After graduating with an associate’s degree, graduates are eligible to begin Oklahoma respiratory therapist careers as certified Respiratory Therapists. The minimal certification required is the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential. After passing this exam, graduates are able to work in entry-level positions while pursuing further education and certifications. In order to pass the exam, graduates must have the skills to perform and modify certain respiratory care procedures. They must also handle equipment safely and properly while insuring the elimination of contamination. To achieve this certification, applicants must be able to review and gain information about a patient’s health.


Registered Respiratory Therapist

To move further in a Respiratory Therapist career, such as a supervisory position, a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification is required. To obtain this certification, applicants will be tested on their written and clinical skills in the respiratory therapy medical field. Prior to taking this exam applicants must already have a CRT certification.

The education needed to take this exam can be acquired at a 4-year training program. Graduates of a 4-year program will receive a bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy. The extended education requirements focus on human anatomy and physiology. Other course requirements include chemistry, physics, microbiology, and mathematics.

Respiratory Therapist License

To obtain a Respiratory Therapist license in Oklahoma, either a CRT or RRT credential is needed. Once a certification program has been accomplished, an application can be submitted to Oklahoma’s licensing authorities. In order for a Respiratory Therapist to legally practice their pulmonary skills, they must have a license. A license is due for renewal every two years. If the renewal of the licenses in not completed in time, the license can be forfeited for a set period of time.
