In Idaho, job growth is expected for all dental professionals, including dental assistants. There is expected to be a 30% job growth for dental assistants over the course of the next six years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are currently 2,000 Idaho dental assistants work. Idaho is among the top five states with the highest concentration of dental assistants, with the majority of them working in dental offices.

How to Become a Dental Assistant in Idaho

The state of Idaho does not require licensing or registration of dental assistants. However, if a dental assistant is licensed or trained in another state, he or she must provide evidence of training to the Idaho Board of Dentistry prior to performing any expanded functions.

Dental assistants in Idaho receive their training primarily on-the-job. They must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and become CPR certified. There are also no radiology requirements for dental assistants in the state of Idaho, so all dental assistants can legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiological procedures under the supervision a licensed dentist. Dental assistants who wish to perform expanded functions must hold a current Dental Assistant National Board (DANB) Certification and complete the education and exam requirements set by the Idaho Board of Dentistry. For a complete list of functions that can be performed without additional education, visit the DANB website (www.danb.org).
