When choosing a school and program in which to complete your long term care education in Idaho, the most important thing to consider is what kind of career you want.

If you’re looking to become a nursing aide or resident assistant, then you’ll have to sign up for a several week program put on by any number of community colleges and medical educational organizations. You’ll learn everything you need to know to work alongside medical professionals, interact with and care for elderly patients, and provide quality of life assistance.

Nurses that chose to specialize in long term care will want to earn either an associate’s or bachelor’s in nursing, with an emphasis in care for the elderly. Your education will generally follow the same path as that of a normal nurse’s, but you’ll complete your internship at a nursing home or on the elderly ward of a place like the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, or the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. You’ll also take much more gerontology focused-classes, and need to complete a special long-term care exam along with the standard NCLEX-RN.

Nursing home administrators and management staff will need to earn a bachelor’s degree in life care facility management, or a master’s for increased job opportunities and placement. If you enter into such a program, you’ll find a curriculum that will teach you all you need to know about the specifics and ins and outs of managing nursing homes, as well as providing you with a solid business, accounting, and finance education. Nursing home administrators in the state will need to complete a one year internship, complete both a nationally approved, and state approved competency exam, and fulfill twenty hours of continuing education every year.
