Find the right school for you
- Graduating from high school or attaining a GED is almost always needed to enter a medical assistant training program. While in high school, look for courses that offer training in office management skills, advanced computer skills, bookkeeping, basic math and communications. Courses in biology, medical sciences and basic health care are also good background for being accepted to a medical assistant training program.
- Medical assistants in Idaho have the option of completing accredited one-, two-, or four-year Idaho medical assistant programs after high school. One-year programs offer a certificate, while two-year courses offer an associates degree in medical assisting. Four-year courses require more advanced coursework and a longer externship and offer a bachelor of applied science degree in medical assisting.
- Certified training programs in Idaho teach medical assistants basic and advanced medical skills, such as how to take accurate patient histories, use some medical equipment and handle lab specimens. Medical assistants are also taught important administrative skills that keep the healthcare office running smoothly, including appointment scheduling, insurance procedures, and principles of medical billing and coding.
