The medical lab technician needs to be well organized, detail-oriented and have excellent communication, computing and interpersonal skills. The exam fee is $185 and may be paid online or by check through the mail.
Applicants may substitute either a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course or three years full-time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Clinical Microscopy in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last ten years may be for the Medical Lab Technician education requirement. An official transcript verifying the degree and science requirements must be submitted as well as reference forms if the applicant is providing clinical experience as a substitution for the medical technician training program.

When an application and documentation for eligibility have been approved by the BOC, applicants receive a letter providing admission to the examination within a three-month period.
