However, as of July 1, 2009, pharmacy technicians in Idaho must also obtain national certification to qualify as a legitimate pharmacy technician. Until certification is gained, applicants are considered technicians-in-training. This certification must be completed through nationally accredited certification agencies such as: the Institute for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) or the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The ICPT exam is called the ExCPT and costs $105. The PTCB exam is called the PTCE and costs $129. By passing either of these multiple-choice exams, applicants can achieve the status of a CPhT, or certified pharmacy technician. Not only is certification necessary in Idaho, it also allows pharmacy technicians to practice across state borders for easier job transference. National Recertification is required every two years in addition to 20 hours of accumulated continued education credits.
