A physician assistant in Idaho requires a master's degree. The curriculum in physician assistant schools in Idaho is usually two years, divided into one year of in-class training in biology, physiology, assessment, research, and pharmacology and in diagnosis and treatment of diseases that form the basis of a primary-care practice; the second year involves clinical education, with supervised rotations in primary and specialty care medical practices. Rotations may be in family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, prenatal care and gynecology, geriatrics, emergency medicine, and pediatrics.
Generally physician assistant programs are found at medical schools, academic health centers, online schools of allied health, and specific physician assistant schools in Idaho.
To be approved for prescription-writing privileges for legend and controlled drugs, a physician assistant must submit an application that includes the following: documentation of passing at least 30 hours of courses with pharmacology content, an indication of how frequently the supervising physicians will look over prescriptions, and a statement by the supervising doctor that the applicant is qualified to write prescriptions. The applicant must also be registered with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Idaho Board of Pharmacy.
The fee for an initial license is $120.00, according to the board website.
