LPN Programs in Illinois - IL

How to become a Licensed Practical Nurse in Illinois

After gaining formal education and training through an LPN program in Illinois, visit the Illinois Board of Nursing website and apply for NCLEX-PN examination and state licensure. To do this, candidates must obtain, complete and submit a formal application form along with a $50 processing fee. In addition, candidates must show proof of having graduated from an approved Illinois LPN program that is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. The application will also ask for all work experience gathered from the prior five years since program graduation, if any. If a candidate has been granted a license to practice in any other state(s), licensure details will be required. All LPNs must pass a criminal background check prior to licensure. Therefore, candidates must provide verification of undergoing fingerprint processing through the Illinois police department as well. All licenses will expire on January 31st of each odd numbered year, after which LPNs must submit a renewal request along with a $30 renewal fee.

Once the application is submitted for review, the Illinois Board of Nursing will determine if a candidate is eligible to take the national PN competency examination, called the NCLEX-PN. No candidate will be granted a license to practice without successfully passing this exam. After a candidate is found to be qualified to take the NLEX-PN examination, registration through Pearson Vue is necessary. Test scores will be sent to the Illinois State Board. The test may be attempted a total of three times within a three year time frame beginning from the PN program graduation date.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring LPNs in Chicago, Aurora, Rockford and Joliet, Illinois may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Evanston Hospital, Advocate Christ Medical Center, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
