The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that more than 2,500 individuals are employed as massage therapists in Illinois. The field of massage therapy is expected to grow faster than the past averages, due to increased knowledge of the many health benefits associated with massage therapy.  Both online schools and Illinois massage therapy schools are prepared to provide the training necessary to make these opportunities a reality in this burgeoning professional field.

A minimum of 500 hours acquired in a supervised classroom and supervised hands-on curriculum is standard of most Illinois massage therapy schools

The following courses must have been successfully completed through Illinois massage therapy schools:

  • Human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and kinesiology
  • Massage therapy theory, technique, and practice including: effleurage, gliding, petrissage, kneading, compression, friction, tapotement, percussion, vibration, direct pressure, superficial warming techniques, pumping, stretching, jostling, shaking, and rocking
  • Contraindications, benefits, universal precautions, body mechanics, history, client data collection, documentation, ethics, business and legalities of massage therapy, professional standards such as draping and modesty, therapeutic relationships, and communications

A minimum average of a 70% or higher must be obtained in each course related to massage therapy, as well as clinical work.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Massage Therapists in Chicago, Aurora, Rockford and Joliet, Illinois may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Evanston Hospital, Advocate Christ Medical Center, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
