Midwives provide healthcare to women throughout their lives, from gynecological care and treatment to pregnancy, labor, the birthing experience and postpartum care.  Those interested in becoming a part of this rich heritage will find there are a number of post-baccalaureate certificate and masters degree programs in nurse-midwifery available in Illinois that are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME). A number of these programs have distance learning education options as well.

The nurse-midwifery curriculum includes basic courses found in standard nursing studies, such as classes in physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, as well as ethics in nursing.

Some of the typical courses that students will take as part of midwifery programs cover such topics as reproductive healthcare for women, anatomy, preconception counseling, genetics, and nutrition. Students in Illinois also become familiar with various positions that a mother may employ during childbirth to facilitate delivery. They also study different birthing options. For example, water birth is an experience that many women are interested in. Breastfeeding and lactation courses are included as well, since a midwife is often called upon to work with a new mother and her infant to establish a healthy breastfeeding bond.

Upon successful completion of the course of study, graduates will be eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
