Some courses require drug testing, a criminal background check, immunization, liability insurance, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, a uniform, or equipment. One online school available to Illinois students offers a Nursing Informatics degree with part-time, full-time and post-master’s degree options. Students work with a program advisor to design a hands-on nursing informatics practicum that can be completed at a health care institution convenient for the student.

Participants in a master's degree program in nursing informatics in Indiana will explore many aspects of health and information science. Topics can range from information technology to the health care system and include nursing research, nursing therapies, medical ethics, information technology in health care, project management, information management, and consumer healthcare informatics.

Nursing informatics students in Indiana may also enroll in certificate programs in nursing informatics at the graduate level, usually as post-master's programs, offered at several campuses and online. These Illinois nursing informatics programs serve as an introduction to the informatics field for students who have already completed study in nursing, such as an undergraduate or master's degree, or who have earned the RN license. Additionally, the certificate can qualify students for professional examination in nursing informatics.

Since the certificate is typically intended for students new to informatics, courses are more introductory than those for the master's degree. Topics may include informatics in health care, information systems, database design, health care technology, and project management.
