Currently, most physical therapists attend a four-year college and receive a bachelor’s degree before attending a 3-4 year doctor of physical therapy (DPT) degree program.  However, there are certain schools that still offer a Master’s degree.  In either case, the state of Illinois has some specifications for an acceptable physical therapy education.  Illinois physical therapy schools must be conferred by an accredited medical school.

Illinois even offers a pre-physical therapy program which is pretty rare. At least 120 credit hours must be completed towards the degree, which must include subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, neurology, and psychology.  Moreover, at least 800 hours of clinical education must be completed, including practice in medicine and surgery.  A grade of a C must be obtained in every course.  More information about the specific education requirements for physical therapists in Illinois may be found at the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR) website.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Physical Therapists in Chicago, Aurora, Rockford and Joliet, Illinois may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Evanston Hospital, Advocate Christ Medical Center, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
