Become a CNA in Indiana

How to Become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in Indiana

To become a certified nurse assistant, or CNA, in Indiana, first gain proper training and education to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of service possible. State regulations require that aspiring CNAs successfully complete a formal training program that is approved by the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH). Although federal regulations demand CNAs to complete a minimum of 75 hours of formal training, in Indiana, CNA programs must include at least 105 hours of educational training. There are numerous training program sites throughout Indiana in local hospices, hospitals, retirement communities, rehabilitation centers, adult career institutions, health education centers, nursing homes, technical/vocational schools, community colleges and state universities.

To confirm the validity of a chosen Indiana certification program, students can obtain, fill out and submit an “Application for Approval of the 105 Hour Nurse Aide Training Program” form through the ISDH. The application must provide the following information:

  • Name and place of the training program
  • Clinical site details
  • Program director name, and the dates and locations
  • Program director’s copy of the CNA train-the-trainer course certificate

*For a complete list of state approved nurse aide programs, visit the ISDH website at www.in.gov/isdh/20510.htm

After a CNA training program is officially approved, students must successfully complete the program in its entirety. Afterward, students are qualified to sit for the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation and Medication Aide Final Examination administered by Ivy Tech Community College. There is a $75 fee for both the written and skills portion of the exam. By passing examination, the student is added to the state registry as a CNA, and can then legally perform CNA duties of employment in Indiana. For further details contact:
