Steps to Become a Dental Assistant in Indiana
Dental assisting is not currently a licensed or registered profession in the state of Indiana. A dental assistant may perform “basic supportive dental procedures specified by the state dental practice act under the supervision of a licensed dentist” according to the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The legislature of Indiana recently passed law that recognizes dental assistants, so as early as next year the rules and regulations regarding dental assistant’s education, training, registration and certification may change. For the most current legislative information, contact the Indiana State Board of Dentistry. Since there are no set guidelines for becoming a dental assistant, most dental assistants receive their training on-the-job.Dental assistants in Indiana who wish to perform coronal polishing or fluoride administration must complete board-approved curriculum in those fields in order to become qualified to perform such duties.
