Right now the health care industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. As a result, many health care professionals and post-secondary students interested in working with mothers, infants, and families needing breastfeeding assistance should consider a career as a lactation consultant in Indiana. The best way to gain entrance into this new and exciting career is by completing education in general health care disciplines and in human lactation and breastfeeding.

Most lactation consultants in Indiana kick-start their careers by enrolling in an institute of higher education and earning a degree in a health care related discipline. Fortunately, Indiana has over 100 different state colleges and universities, technical and community colleges, vocational and career development academies, and even online and distance learning programs available to students wishing to earn degrees in health care, such as: health care management, medical assisting, practical nursing, human services, health administration and registered nursing.

After graduating from a health care-related program in Indiana, students will need to find additional education that is specifically focused on human lactation and breastfeeding. Although these type of programs are not as widely available, in Indiana, lactation and breastfeeding education is offered by the Indiana State Department of Health—Maternal and Child Health Division, La Leche League in Fort Wayne, the Indiana Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program, and the Indiana Perinatal Network along with local hospitals and health care facilities. If a selected program does not include hands-on clinical experience, practical lactation consultant training must be gained elsewhere as in paid or volunteer positions or through externships in lactation consulting.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Lactation Consultants in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville, Indiana may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Deaconess Hospital, Community Hospital East, and Parkview Hospital.
