While nursing aides will need to undergo only a three-month program, those looking to become registered nurses in Indiana’s long term care facilities can expect to spend 3 to 5 years in school, working both in the classroom and online, and in supervised internships at nursing homes and care facilities like the Deaconess Hospital or the Parkview Hospital. Associate’s and bachelor’s degrees are common among registered nurses, with the two offering different promotional and wage-earning opportunities. In addition to passing the NCLEX-RN, registered nurses in Indiana will need to pass a certification exam especially geared towards those going into elderly care.

Nursing home administrators will want to earn at least a bachelor’s degree, though a master’s is probably preferable. It’s most common for students to study health care administration directly, though often business and management degree holders will take specialized classes and courses in long term care and then cross over, especially if they’ve gotten enough experience in the business world. To be eligible for licensure, nursing home administrators in the state will need to complete a 6-month internship, and pass two certifying exams, one given by a national agency, and one administered by the state of Indiana.
