Midwives in Indiana today are educated and licensed registered nurses who have successfully completed graduate midwifery courses to become a certified nurse midwife (CNM). With a tradition that goes back to earliest recorded times, midwives care for women throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as after the birth of the baby. Today, a certified nurse midwife (CNM) may also provide annual gynecological exams, family planning, and counseling in wellness and nutrition.

While some may have a preconception that midwives are only used when a mother chooses a home birth, many hospitals, including the Community Hospital East in Indianapolis, actually offer the option of using a certified nurse midwife.  This option is only made available to women with normal pregnancies free of complications.  The midwife would work collaboratively with obstetricians or specialists in the event that complications should arise.

Students taking midwifery courses in Indiana will study antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care. Classes will also cover lactation and how to prepare the new mother to have a successful experience nursing her newborn. Current statistics validate the advantages of breastfeeding infants, and Indiana is one of the progressive states that has a law  in place that protects a woman’s right to breastfeed in the workplace. Students will also have a midwifery clinical practicum as part of their study under the supervision of a certified nurse midwife.
