Educational Requirements for Public Health Workers in Indiana

As with any profession these days, a high school diploma is a necessary requirement in Indiana to enter the public health field.  Upon graduation from high school there is a centralized website available to individuals to search for post-secondary programs in public health.  The Association of Schools of Public Health offers information to all prospective students of public health, including information directed to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students.  Through the ASPH website (http://www.asph.org), a search can be done which will provide information on all types of public health school programs, including distance learning options.

Choosing the correct post-secondary school will open up more opportunities for those seeking positions in this field.  There are more than 15 different degrees and 20 majors in public health available from accredited online and campus based Indiana public health schools.  Options for degrees include a Masters of Public Health (MPH), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and Doctor of Science (ScD).  The five principle majors in public health are:

  1. Behavioral Science/Health Education
  2. Biostatistics
  3. Environmental Health
  4. Epidemiology
  5. Health Services Administration

In addition to completing a degree program in public health, obtaining certification in one’s related field can have a significant impact on job placement. One example of state certification is the Indiana Society for Public Health Education, which offers state certification for public health educators. Additionally, national certification can also boost career potential.  The National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) offers a Public Health exam for graduates of public health programs which are accredited. The national exam is offered one time per year, in August, and a study guide can be found on the website @ http://www.publichealthexam.org.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Public Health Professionals in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville, Indiana may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Deaconess Hospital, Community Hospital East, and Parkview Hospital.
