The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 57,000 registered nurses (RNs) in Indiana in 2008. Many RNs begin their careers as nursing aids or licensed practical nurses before obtaining the RN license. If you have a strong sense of compassion and wish to help others, nursing may be the career for you. However, there is a lot of science, math and education involved, and the career demands physical stamina as well as attention to detail. Ultimately, though, it is one of the more rewarding jobs available.
