The authoritative body that regulates veterinary technicians in Indiana is the Indiana Board of Veterinary Medicine Examiners Professional Licensing Agency. All professionals working under the title of “veterinary technician” will need to register with this board prior to employment. In order to gain a license to practice, all veterinary technicians will need to complete all eligibility requirements and submit an application. First, all veterinary technicians must be at least eighteen years old and obtain a high school diploma or GED. Next, professionals will need to graduate from an accredited Indiana veterinary technician school that provides formal education and training. Upon completing a veterinary technician or technology program, students will need to pass a national competency examination, called the veterinary technician national examination (VTNE) administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).

Once examination is successfully passed and the application for licensure is officially approved, the title of registered veterinary technician (RVT) is granted. Since this occupation involves administering medicine to animals, anyone with a criminal conviction relating to occupational duties will be denied the ability to get certified in Indiana. The initial application fee is $45, and VTNE fee is $200. Licenses expire on January 1st of every even-numbered year. Licensing renewal is dependent upon the completion of sixteen hours of continuing education that is specifically focused on aspects of veterinary technology.
