Dental assistants in the state of Iowa cannot practice unless they are registered with the Iowa Dental Board or they have dental assistant trainee status, as given by the Iowa Dental Board. Dental assisting trainee status is given to those individuals engaging in on-the-job training to meet the requirements for registration. Below are the steps to become a registered dental assistant in Iowa:

  • Prepare for a career as a dental assistant in high school by taking science and math classes.
  • Be 18 and have graduated from high school or have a GED.
  • Apply to a dental assistant program or locate a dentist who is willing to train you on-the job
  • Complete program or on-the-job training.
  • Become certified in CPR.
  • Take the necessary dental assistant exams and jurisprudence exams as set by the Iowa Dental Board.
  • Submit an application for registration as a dental assistant in Iowa to the Iowa Dental Board.
  • Consider becoming qualified in expanded functions. Additional education is required.
