Upon completing a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Board of Health Education Schools (ABHES), candidates must then pass a Certifying Examination. . Although Iowa does not require a state license or certification to become a medical assistant either, it is greatly preferred and even in some cases insisted by employers that medical assistants prove their dedication and professionalism by being Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs) or Registered Medical Assistants (RMAs) through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Earning certification in Iowa does not limit a medical assistant’s certification to Iowa, as the CAAHEP and the ABHES are both nationally acknowledged accrediting agencies. Recertification is encouraged every five years.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Assistants in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport, Iowa may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Saint Luke's Hospital, and Genesis Medical Center East.
