Iowa Medical Transcription Salaries

The average Iowa medical transcriptionist salary is about $30,000 per year; but, that annual earning is greatly impacted by the level of experience, training and type of credential that a medical transcriptionist has.

Iowa Medical Transcriptionist Credentials

There are two credentials that medical transcriptionists in Iowa have to choose from after their schooling is complete: the RMT designation and the CMT designation. The RMT designation, or registered medical transcriptionist, is available to freshly graduated Iowa students who are looking to have their ability and confidence as a medical transcriptionist recognized nationally.

The CMT designation, or certified medical transcriptionist, is only available for existing RMT’s. In addition to already being an RMT, the RMT must also have two years background experience in an acute care facility before they will be eligible to test for this type of credential.

Both of these credentials are administered and maintained by the AHDI and testing for these credentials is only available through one of their facilities. The RMT examination fee is $200 and the examination fee for the CMT is $275.

Once a medical transcriptionist in Iowa carries one of these designations, they are responsible for recertifying their credential every three years. The RMT requirement is only one online class during every three-year period, whereas the CMT requirement is 30 college credits every three years.
