Midwifery is a highly skilled career that requires advanced education. Most midwifery programs require incoming students to be RNs or to have a bachelor’s degree; some require both. Although there are no schools that offer midwifery in Iowa, there are many colleges and universities where one can earn credentials to be an RN as well as a bachelor’s degree. There are several midwifery programs in surrounding states, several of which include online courses which allow students to complete their studies without relocating. Intensive weekend seminars and cooperation with local hospitals or other health care facilities enable students to complete their practicum experiences in like fashion.

Many Iowa hospitals offer the services of certified nurse-midwives. At Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, certified nurse-midwives work with patients to help them make the best decisions for themselves and their families. They are available for the entire lifespan—from birth to puberty to menopause. Likewise, Genesis Medical Center East in Davenport offers a practice that includes physicians, certified nurse-midwives, a physician assistant and certified nurse practitioners. This variety of services allows women to make the best choice for their health care needs. In addition, for those who are seeking a career in midwifery, the Genesis Health Group offers scholarships for residents who are studying health care professions, including midwifery.
