Medical Billing and Coding Education in Kansas - KS

Becoming a medical billing and coding specialist in Kansas

If a student chooses to follow the Kansas State Department of Education Health Informatics pathway after graduating from high school, the next step in a health information management (HIM) career is for the student to go on to attend a Kansas medical billing certificate program or a comprehensive program for both medical billing and coding certification in Kansas.

There are two-year associate degree programs or a four-year college program with a baccalaureate degree.
Learning programs that lead to an entry-level coding certificate generally can be completed within one year. This education track can also encompass online learning or distance learning programs.

Students may be eligible to sit for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credentialing examination after graduation.
Education programs that lead to a Health Information Management (HIM) associate-degree enable students to assume greater job responsibilities, including jobs that require coding and data analysis. An associate degree typically can be achieved within two years, depending upon if the student attends school full time or part-time.

  • Students with the CCA credential may also choose to go on to a two-year associate degree program.

  • Upon successfully completing one of these programs, students may sit for a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential.

After graduating from a baccalaureate degree program students may become RHIA-certified, in addition to their degree.
Whichever program a student chooses to attend, the school should be accredited by the independent accrediting organization for Health Informatics (HI) and Health Information Management (HIM) education programs, the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). A list of accredited programs can be found on the CAHIIM Web site.

Once they enter the job market, students may find that many employers are looking for qualified candidates that, in addition to graduating, also possess national certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Therefore after successfully completing post-secondary education, the next step is professional certification. Students can take the certification examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Continuing professional education (CPE) requirements are required to maintain certification.
