Kansas Nurse Informatics Certification - KS

The State of Kansas does not actually license the nursing informatics profession. To get Kansas nursing informatics certification, you will first have to be a registered and state licensed nurse.

In order to get certified as a RN, you will be required to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), which is proctored by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). There is a $200 fee for taking this test. Once this test is passed and you become registered as a nurse, you can then begin pursuing a nursing informatics certificate in Kansas.

Here is a breakdown of certifications that you will need:

  • Registered Nurse – You must have the RN-BC credential, which is given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This is typically a clinical setting type of credential.
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) certification, obtainable from the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

There is a fee of $390 for the ANCC, and upon certification, you will be required to renew your certification every 5 years. Because their rules and regulations for renewal are constantly changing, based on current professional conditions, it is best that you contact the ANCC to find out what exactly will be required of you at renewal time.

The CPHIMS exam, on the other hand, costs $375. If you are certified as a CPHIMS, your certificate will be renewable every 3 years. HIMSS allows you to take either 45 credits of education or to retake the test. However, you will have to pay the testing fee again if you choose that option.
