Agencies of Accreditation

The two accrediting agencies in this career field are the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Because you must have attended a school that has accreditation from one of these groups before you can even qualify for the ANCC and HIMSS certifications, it is important that you do this research before you choose one of the nursing informatics schools in Kansas.

Educational Degrees

To work effectively in nursing informatics, you must be knowledgeable as a nurse, which is why you are required to have the RN certification. In order to get that certification, you need to have the minimum of a bachelor’s degree, which takes between 2 and 4 years of schooling.

Currently, the master’s is a supplemental type of degree for this career field and is probably better suited to professionals with advancement in mind. However, as technology progresses and your career becomes higher in demand, it is not unlikely that a Kansas healthcare informatics master’s degree will be preferred at some point.

After you have one these degrees, the next step is to take a certificate course in nursing informatics, which is usually a 1-year course. You should know that most employers prefer to hire an informatics specialist that has completed this type of course.

Internships

It is very likely that your nursing informatics certificate program will include an internship. Not only is this the best way to learn in an on-the-job manner, but it also gives you some visibility to potential employers. This way you can put your education to use and possibly land a future job at the same time.
