Become a Personal Trainer in Kansas - KS

Kansas does not have a licensing board or even a licensing process at the state level, but aspiring personal trainers in Kansas are expected to complete some formal training.  Graduates of online training programs may elect to register, sit for, and complete a national-level certification exam. There are quite a few examination and certification agencies nationwide that provide this service, but it is up to the individual to research and choose the one that best meets their needs. Although in Kansas personal trainer certification is not a requirement of state law, employers expect that the trainers they hire already have the requisite training and certification needed to do the job. They also expect that their trainers will keep that certification up-to-date and will explore other certifications in specialty areas that their customers enjoy. Personal trainers hoping to advance to supervisory positions will most definitely have to pursue continuing education and training in fitness-related areas as well as management and supervision.

Becoming a personal trainer in Kansas does not require a state-mandated license, but there are some steps that a trainer must take to attain enough credibility to be hired by an employer or to practice as a consultant:

  1. You must complete a training program specifically designed for personal trainers, or complete a degree program in a health-related field that includes training in occupational science, physical science, sports science, or kinesiology.
  2. You must study for and take a national certification exam for instructors from a nationally-recognized personal training association (some training programs include the examination process as part of their package). There are several recognized national certification agencies.
  3. You should obtain or update your CPR/First Aid certification. This isn’t always required for certification, but most employers will require it for employment.
  4. Once certified, you can find a job in a gym or other health-related facility, or open your own business and take in personal clients. Running your own business can be a great option, but does require more work and initiative.
  5. You should maintain and update your certifications by keeping up with all continuing education requirements. You should also seek out certifications in specialty areas that increase your marketability as a fitness professional.

Personal trainers who wish to excel in their chosen career field must continue to access training in health-related areas such as exercise science and physical fitness. They should also explore specialty certifications in activities like aerobics, weight training, Pilates, and sports that they wish to promote (racquetball, tennis, running, etc.).
