Educational Requirements for Pharmacy Technicians in Kansas

Many employers prefer that their pharmacy technicians have graduated from either online or campus based Kansas pharmacy technician schools. These programs can be at vocational schools, community colleges, or online. Students in a pharmacy technician program will usually have at least 240 hours of a mixture of coursework and practical education, with about 120 of these hours in education in theory. Courses will be in pharmacy law and ethics, medical and pharmaceutical terminology, insurance procedures, inventory processes, customer service interaction, making calculations, and pharmaceutical classifications.

There is usually a clinical component to most pharmacy technician programs, lasting an average of 40 hours. This involves handling medications, mixing and compounding, learning to measure dosages, inventory control, order entry, stocking and restocking of medications, and record-keeping. Some programs also have externships, where students work in a real pharmacy under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Often such externships can also be included as job experience when applying for a pharmacy technician position after completion of the education program.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Pharmacy Techs in Wichita, Overland Park and Kansas City, Kansas may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Wesley Medical Center, Via Christi Regional Medical Center, and Saint Francis Health Center.
