Kansas is home to one of the oldest military bases west of the Mississippi; it is also the site of a growing need for ultrasound technicians. With a child obesity rate of over 30 percent and an estimated population growth rate of 8 percent, Kansas will need people to diagnose vascular and cardiac problems.

A typical diagnostic medical sonography program in Kansas will take three to five years to complete, depending on the student's pace. Kansas is one of the only States with a DMS programs that offers specializations in general, cardiac, and vascular ultrasound at the certificate and bachelor's degree levels.

The general sonography programs concentrate on procedures appropriate for all forms of ultrasound, including echocardiography, neurosonography, and abdominal, vascular, and gynecological ultrasound. These programs also provide students with clinical laboratory experience.

Vascular sonography programs help students concentrate on diagnosing blockages and problems in the blood vessels. In this program, they study the anatomy of the vascular system, vascular ultrasound techniques, and ultrasound physics. When they have finished the program, they complete an internship in vascular sonography.

Cardiac sonography programs deal with issues specific to the heart. These students study cardiac anatomy and physiology, adult echocardiography, ultrasound physics, doppler ultrasound instrumentation, and other areas within the scope of their specialization. These are usually fast-paced programs that take about three years to complete.

Once an ultrasound technician has become certified in Kansas in his specialty, he needs to earn at least 15 continuing education credits through ARDMS. The primary purpose of these programs is to help candidates maintain certification, understand how their profession is changing, and gain expertise in other areas of the field.

Through both campus and online schools, woud-be ultrasound technicians in Wichita, Overland Park and Kansas City, Kansas may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Wesley Medical Center, Via Christi Regional Medical Center, and Saint Francis Health Center.
