Medical assisting is a stimulating field and requires training in a variety of different areas and capacities. Becoming a certified medical assistant (CMA) in Kentucky can be achieved in as few as one or two years. There are a number of different medical assistant schools in Kentucky from universities, community colleges, vocational schools and online educational programs that feature training for medical assistants. Most training for medical assistants in Kentucky is done in career colleges. In some of the major universities, students receive formal training in the classroom but are also allowed to participate in training off-campus in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and other health care facilities.

Many medical assistant schools in Kentucky emphasize a hands-on approach, where students learn how to give injections, check vital signs, conduct basic laboratory tests, and perform other tasks that will be helpful in a medical assisting career. Most training programs will also likely include some courses on basic anatomy and medical terms. Besides clinical and hands-on training, many CMA training programs offer courses that will familiarize the student with administrative duties like billing, record keeping, medical coding, and dealing with patients and insurance companies.

In order to become a CMA in Kentucky, medical assistants must pass the Certified Medical Assistant Examination. Applicants are required to either (1) have graduated from a degree program or (2) have prior work experience in the field of medical assisting before registering for this exam. The CMA exam can be taken in January, June, or October of each year. It is administered as a paper-and-pencil multiple choice exam, and study guides can be found online.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Assistants in Louisville, Lexington and Owensboro, Kentucky may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Norton Hospital, Saint Elizabeth Medical Center, and Owensboro Medical Health.
