Becoming a medical billing and coding specialist in Kentucky

The suggested steps to a career in healthcare doing medical billing and coding in Kentucky are as follows.
Early in career planning, students considering a Kentucky medical billing certificate or comprehensive medical billing and coding certification in Kentucky should determine if the medical field and healthcare issues are truly areas that interest them.

Additionally, for a career as medical records technology/technician, medical billing assistant or coding specialist in Kentucky there are some aspects of the job that should be considered if a student is to be happy with their career choice. Medical billing and coding specialists typically do not have a lot of interaction with patients. They are called upon to be self-directed, often work by themselves and may be called upon to complete an amount of work within a specified time frame.  This is a job for individuals that are detail oriented, meticulous, and task-oriented.

If this is indeed the career goal, then the Health Science cluster program is a good choice in high school. The Health Science program’s curriculum of Kentucky medical billing certificate programs will integrate math, science, communication and technical knowledge, encompassing courses in medical science, health and wellness, health science, medical math, and medical terminology.

Following this career path at the post-secondary level students would pursue an associate degree, diplomas and certificates by enrolling in a one- or two-year program at a technical school or community college. A number of online or distance learning program also offer medical billing and coding courses.

In general, at the post-secondary education level, students can anticipate taking coursework in statistics, quality improvement, computer science, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical law, coding, and database applications. Most programs require that the student complete an internship to gain on-the-job experience in addition to classroom studies.

Certification is voluntary in the state of Kentucky, and is not mandatory at this time. However after graduation from a technical school or community college, pursuing credentials through an independent, nonprofit organization such as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or other professional organizations is beneficial. Some of the certifications that students can attain: Registered Health Information Associate (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).

For a student to apply for accreditation, they must have graduated from an education program accredited by the Commission on

Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). A list of accredited programs can be found on the CAHIIM Web site, www.cahiim [dot]org.

Physicians’ offices, hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, research centers, and medical facilities are some of the places of potential employment for medical billing and coding specialists.

One specialty career within the medical billing and coding specialist realm to consider is that of a cancer registrar.  These specialists record data of patients being treated for cancer in tumor registry data systems. Additional information is available on the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) Web site.
