According to the Kentucky Occupational Therapy Association, occupational therapists can work with many people, including those with Alzheimer’s, repetitive motion disorders, aging conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, and much more. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the position of occupational therapist is growing in Kentucky, especially for those treating the elderly population. Some occupational therapists may choose to focus on the specific field of gerontology as the population ages. Each state regulates this occupation with its own rules and licensing requirements.
In 2006 there were approximately 99,000 occupational therapists nationally. There are likely more now since this is a burgeoning field expected to grow 23% through 2016. Most of these jobs are in a hospital setting but there are several other settings where occupational therapists can work. In Kentucky, occupational therapy courses prepare graduates for this extremely rewarding career.
Occupational Therapists Continuing Education Requirements/Licensure Renewal in Kentucky
The annual renewal fee through the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Occupational Therapy is $50. To renew a license, an applicant must complete at least twelve continuing educational units. The courses have to be on the list of approved classes on the Kentucky Board’s website. Each course has an approval number. Some examples of approved course are an Amputee Training Clinic, Person Centered Communications, Neuromuscular Practice, Effective Gerontology Exercise, Brain Fitness After Thirty, and more. A renewal application needs to be filled out annually with information on what continuing education units were completed, along with the fee.
