The first physical therapist (PT) to practice in Kentucky began in 1935. Within a few years, there were more than a dozen physical therapists working in the state, helping polio victims reduce pain and increase mobility, and later helping wounded WWII veterans heal from their injuries, according to the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association (KPTA).

Today, the state employs nearly 1,800 physical therapists and more than 1,200 physical therapist assistants (PTAs), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is from the nearly 107,000 physical therapists and PTAs who help suffering patients throughout the nation. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) represents about 75,000 of these professionals nationwide. The APTA identifies physical therapy work as high paying and in high demand.
