To work as physical therapist in Kentucky, one must first earn a bachelor’s degree in a health care related field. Then, they must enter one of the Kentucky physical therapy schools. There are a variety of online universities with this program as well.
In addition to retaking the 2-credit hour jurisprudence exam every renewal cycle, physical therapists must take at least 28 hours of continued competency hours and PTAs at least 18 hours. The renewal cycle is every two years.
The KPTA posts approved courses that you can take. Of all continuing competency hours, you must spend at least 18 of them in Category 1 activities. These include classes at an accredited school, writing scholarly articles, or giving presentations. Another way to earn four hours is by getting elected or appointed to the KPTA, APTA, FSBPT as an officer or committee chair. Another four hours can be earned by being appointed to the Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy. Practicing PT or PTA for at least 1,000 hours every two years will earn you five hours, as will teaching an approved PT or PTA class.
No more than 10 hours per renewal can consist of Category 2 credits. These can be earned through self-instruction (such as reading professional magazines or books), attending lectures or symposiums, being a member of the APTA, offering your professional services in community service, or being in a PT study group.
