Long term care education in British Columbia is ongoing. Although an entry-level educational degree is needed to begin a career in this field, education for long term care professionals goes above and beyond beginning education. In fact, the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia mandates that all registered nurses complete a minimum of 1,125 clinical hours (working or training) within the 5 years preceding registration renewal.

The type of degree you should have depends on which subset of long term care you are interested in. Remember that both LPNs and RNs participate in long term care. In British Columbia, licensed practical nurses will have at least 2 years of collegiate-level study, which is generally recognized with an Associate of Science degree. Students seeking RN status will complete an additional 2 years of study working towards receiving a Bachelor of Science degree.

A long term care program in British Columbia might include core classes like:

  • Geriatric Nursing
  • State of Well-Being
  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing
  • Home Hospice Nursing

All of this education comes together to prepare long term care students for the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination, a multiple-choice competence examination administered by the Canadian Nurses Association.
