Find the right school for you
Depending on what aspect of the long term care career field you’ve chosen to work in, your education could be quite different from others entering this field.
For those looking for work as nursing aides and general resident assistants, the best way to enter this career is by enrolling in a several-month-long training program. Nursing assistants in Louisiana will need to rack up 150 hours in the classroom, and then complete a supervised internship. After they’ve been working for a few months, they can test for accreditation from the Red Cross, which allows them to become Certified Nursing Assistants.
Nurses will need to complete all the requirements of their own career, such as earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from a nursing college, or online school, and then completing an internship and passing the NCLEX-RN. Long term care nurses in Louisiana don’t yet need to pass a specialized certification exam, but they are expected to take a healthy amount of long-term care classes in addition to what’s offered in thier standard nursing program.
Nursing home administrators and life care facility administrators will study a broad-based curriculum blending business management, finance and budgeting, medical staff management, with a focus on dealing with age specific issues and nursing home management. It is also not uncommon for businesses majors, and other managerial degree holders in Louisiana to cross over into the world of long term care by completing certain state-set educational requirements, after having established substantial work experience.
