The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork has approved nine massage therapy schools in Louisiana. These include technical schools, community colleges, and schools specifically devoted to teaching massage therapy. In Louisiana, massage school requires 500 hours for licensing that can be completed over nine months with daytime study and a year through evening classes.
Continuing Education Requirements for Massage Therapists in Louisiana
The first year after earning a license to practice massage therapy in Louisiana, no continuing education is required for license renewal. In subsequent years, a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education units must be completed each calendar year.
The law is careful to define what constitutes an hour of continuing education: an “hour” must be at least 50 minutes and should not include tangential activities like speaker introductions or breaks. Furthermore, no program can be taken more than twice to receive credit. Furthermore, credit is only given to the learners of a class, not to the teachers.
Licensed therapists will receive a renewal application in the mail each year. Applicants for renewal must append a copy of CEU credits, including the name and number of the provider, date, and total hours. The application must include the applicant’s name and license number. Fee for renewal is $125, with an additional late fee of $100 if the renewal form is postmarked after December 31.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Massage Therapists in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport, Louisiana may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, CHRISTUS Schumpert Saint Mary Place, and Ochsner Medical Center.
