Medical Technologist School in Louisiana

Louisiana Medical Technologist Programs and Continuing Education

Due to Louisiana's strict educational guidelines for medical technologists, students will mainly want to stick to major state colleges and universities. If a medical technology-specific degree is not available, students are encouraged to graduate with a degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science and then gain additional education from medical technology program through a local hospital or health care center. In Louisiana, colleges and universities that do offer degrees in medical technology offer the following options: Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science, Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, and Master of Health Science. Students that prefer online or distance learning education can also earn a Bachelor in Health Care Studies Degree. These programs are typically at least fours years in length and are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Although the curriculum requirements to complete programs will differ between programs, most will cover subjects in biology, chemistry, health care, medical terminology, and statistics. Some examples of specific courses found in Louisiana medical technology programs are: Clinical Instrumentation, Hematology and Urinalysis, Blood Banking, Immunohematology, Clinical Diagnosis and Interpretation, Diagnosis Microbiology, Genetics, Clinical Management and Education, and Medical Laboratory Procedures. Students in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport that graduate from these programs may go on to secure exciting positions in some of these areas' most prestigious hospitals like Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, CHRISTUS Schumpert Saint Mary Place, and Ochsner Medical Center.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Technologists in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport, Louisiana may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, CHRISTUS Schumpert Saint Mary Place, and Ochsner Medical Center.
