Most MRI technician training externships last between 3 and 6 months, although it could take longer depending on how many hours you are available each week to dedicate to your training. Every school in Louisiana is different, so the training-hour requirement can vary between schools.
During this training period, you will work with qualified MRI technicians in your local Louisiana community who can share their knowledge and train you in the most productive way. You will learn the principles of MRI technology and how to effectively work as a member of the MRI team. Some of the things you will be taught include:
- Workplace safety and radiation protection
- Legal responsibilities (privacy and safety) to the patient
- Proper positioning for optimum MRI imaging
- Career development and opportunities
It is not necessary for MRI technicians in Louisiana to hold a state license. It is, however, extremely important to be certified. The American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) is the certifying board for this profession. Once you have passed the test administered by the ARMRIT, you can be recognized as a Certified MRI Technician.
