Louisiana Nurse Informatics Certification - LA

For a Louisiana Nursing Informatics Certification, you must first be licensed as a RN, or registered nurse. The State of Louisiana doesn’t license the nursing informatics profession, but they do require that you be educated and licensed as a RN.

Completing and passing the National Council Licensure Examination, also known as NCLEX, which is a test administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, or NCSBN, is the first step to becoming a registered nurse. There is a one-time examination fee of $200, and once you pass the test, you will then be registered, and you will be eligible to obtain your Louisiana nurse informatics certification.

Here are some of the steps that you can take to get a nursing informatics certificate in Louisiana:

  • Become a Registered Nurse – This is a requirement for all nursing informaticists, and you can attain this from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • If you plan on working in an IT setting, you should have the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) certification, which is governed by the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

Upon passage of the ANCC test, you will be given the title of RN-BC. The test will cost you $390 to take, and this is a requirement to begin a profession in nursing informatics. After being certified as a RN-BC, you should then become familiar with the renewal requirements of the ANCC, which typically require that you renew your license every 5 years. However, because of constant changes in the technological and medical communities, these renewal requirements often change.

If you decide to take the CPHIMS examination, it will cost you $375. While this level of certification is not mandated, it is certainly respected and recommended. The renewal requirement for the CPHIMS title is 45 college credits for every 3 years. However, there is also the option of retaking the certification test in lieu of that.
