The Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners requires that Occupational Therapists complete continuing education requirements. A minimum of 15 credit hours is required to practice annually. Forms for documenting hours can be downloaded from the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners website. Continuing education allows occupational therapy professionals to stay abreast of developments in the field. Continuing education represents the profession’s commitment to lifelong learning in order to serve clients.  The Louisiana chapter of the American Association of Occupational Therapists (AAOT) provides a wide range of opportunities to fulfill continuing education requirements.  Look for local institutions  offering Louisiana occupational therapy courses to prove a training environment for CECs either independently or through the AAOT.

Louisiana Licensure Requirements

The Louisiana Medical Examiners Board is the regulation body for Occupational Therapy licenses in the state. Individuals pursuing a career as an Occupational Therapist in Louisiana are required to register and obtain a license with the board.

There are three requirements for obtaining licensure. First, an individual must be of good moral character. This means that an individual must complete a background check and adhere to the professions’ ethical standards.  Second, individuals must pass the “Certified Examination for Occupational Therapists”, which is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.  Third, the Board requires an additional examination that is given twice a year in Louisiana and is managed by an agency approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association.

In some circumstances, the Board may waive the requirement of examination for licensure. Individuals who were employed as Occupational Therapists before the license exam was entered into law may be exempt. Occupational Therapists who are licensed in other states may also be exempt.  It is best to contact the Board for specific exemption details.
