While a degree or certification is not required to become a dental assistant in Maine, earning a dental assistant certification certainly makes one more marketable. Typically dental assistant programs last 9-12 months. There are a few dental assistant schools in Maine.

Maine Dental Assistant Continuing Education Requirements

No continuing education is required for dental assistants in Maine. Training beyond the job however, is encouraged and some dentists may even offer incentives or reimbursement for dental assistants seeking additional education.

Dental assistants who become certified in expanded functions or as dental radiographers must renew their license with the State of Maine Board of Dental Examiners every five years. They must also provide proof of current CPR certification. The state of Maine does not accept on-line CPR courses.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Dental Assistants in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, West Scarborough and Sanford, Maine may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Brighton Medical Center and St. Josephs Hospital.
