Maine Massage Therapy Schools - ME

Massage therapy in Maine is governed by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation Office of Licensing and Regulation. Practitioners must be licensed, and the organization requires massage therapists to undergo 500 hours of training from a certified online program or Maine massage school. Massage therapists are also required to become CPR and First Aid certified, as well as pass a license exam.
The first step to becoming a massage therapist in the state of Maine is to attend courses teaching massage therapy and complete the core curriculum.
The core curriculum consists of:
- 120 hours minimum of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology courses
- Massage therapy theory, technique, and practice courses which include gliding strokes, kneading, direct pressure, deep friction, superficial warming techniques, percussion, compression (also known as pumping), vibration, jostling, shaking, and rocking.
- Courses in contraindications, benefits, universal precautions, body mechanics, business, history, ethics, massage legalities, and professional draping and modesty standards.
- 100 hours minimum of hands-on, supervised, practice.
There are fifteen schools in Maine that offer programs in massage therapy and are recognized by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation Office of Licensing and Registration. These schools are located in Bar Harbor, Lewiston, Augusta, Waldoboro, South Portland, Fairfield, Rockland, Bridgton, Poland, Portland, Canton, Sanford, Westbrook, Bangor and Wells.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Massage Therapists in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, West Scarborough and Sanford, Maine may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Brighton Medical Center and St. Josephs Hospital.
