Maine Medical Laboratory Technician Training Program
Maine Medical Technician Education and Degrees
Currently there are associate’s level Maine medical technician training programs available at campuses and online schools, and there are a few clinical laboratory technician programs at selected community colleges. Because the state does not license or certify its med techs, colleges have not caught up with the need for medical technology or clinical lab science programs. There are a number of accredited online programs in medical laboratory technology that offer both academic coursework and clinical training.
There is also ample opportunity for continuing education, through self-study, distance learning, and meetings and conferences both in Maine and across the country. More information about these opportunities can be found on the website for the American Medical Technologists (AMT) at www.amt1.com.
Medical technicians are a valuable member of the clinical medical team in most hospitals and large labs. Working under the supervision of a medical technologist or research scientist, medical technicians in Maine are often called medical lab technicians or clinical lab technicians. Although there is no formal licensing process for medical technicians in Maine, most employers only hire medical technicians who have gained national certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
